Wildfire-resistant landscaping is not a list of fireproof plants. It is a property-wide strategy for reducing available fuel, interrupting fire pathways, preserving access, supporting irrigation and keeping the landscape maintainable through changing seasons.

Core Principles

Break fuel continuity

Create separation between grasses, shrubs, trees, fences, decks and structures so fire cannot move uninterrupted across the site.

Prioritize the structure

Landscape decisions closest to buildings have the greatest effect on ember ignition, radiant heat and direct flame exposure.

Design for maintenance

A resilient landscape must remain practical to irrigate, prune, clean and inspect every year.

Plan for actual fire behavior

Slope, wind, topography, neighboring fuels and access constraints can change priorities across the property.

Defensible-Space Zones

Zone 0: Immediate noncombustible area

The first five feet around a structure should minimize combustible material, debris accumulation and flame contact. Favor hardscape, mineral surfaces and carefully controlled plantings where permitted.

Zone 1: Lean and clean

From approximately five to thirty feet, reduce plant density, remove ladder fuels, separate shrubs and trees, and maintain irrigated low-fuel areas.

Zone 2: Reduced and managed fuels

Beyond thirty feet, thin crowded vegetation, interrupt continuous fuels, manage grasses and preserve safe access routes.

Important: Defensible-space distances are not universal. Local code, slope, vegetation type and fire exposure can require greater separation.

Plant Selection

No plant is fireproof. Favor plants that are low-growing, open in form, easy to irrigate, slow to accumulate dead material and appropriate for the local climate.

Prefer Use cautiously
High-moisture foliage, low resin content, open branching, deciduous species and plants that remain compact. Dense evergreens, resinous or aromatic plants, species that retain dead material and plants requiring heavy mulch.
Plants suited to the site's water availability and maintenance capacity. Plants that become stressed, dry or unmanageable without intensive care.

Spacing and Fuel Separation

  • Separate shrubs from each other and from structures.
  • Remove branches that overhang roofs, decks or chimneys.
  • Maintain vertical separation between grasses, shrubs and tree canopies.
  • Avoid continuous hedges or ornamental grasses leading toward the home.
  • Break up large planting beds with hardscape and open space.

Groundcover, Mulch and Hardscape

Organic mulch can carry embers and surface fire. Use noncombustible materials near structures and utilities, and keep combustible mulch shallow, separated and well maintained where used farther away.

Lower-risk options

Gravel, decomposed granite, stone, concrete, pavers and irrigated low-growing groundcover.

Higher-risk conditions

Deep bark mulch, pine needles, dry leaves, continuous ornamental grasses and debris trapped under shrubs.

Irrigation and Water Management

Irrigation supports plant health but does not make poor landscape design safe. Prioritize reliable coverage, practical zoning, leak detection, winterization and access to critical areas.

  • Use hydrozones based on plant water needs and exposure.
  • Maintain coverage around high-priority landscape areas.
  • Protect valves, backflow devices and controls from damage.
  • Keep irrigation separate from dedicated wildfire-defense water when appropriate.
  • Inspect for clogged emitters, broken heads and dry pockets.

Seasonal Maintenance

  • Remove leaves, needles and dead vegetation from roofs, gutters, decks and planting beds.
  • Mow grasses before they cure and become continuous fuel.
  • Prune dead branches and thin crowded canopies.
  • Move firewood, furniture and stored materials away from structures.
  • Reassess the landscape after storms, drought, construction or plant growth.

Are there truly fire-resistant plants?

No plant is fireproof. Some plants have characteristics that generally make them less likely to ignite or carry flame, but placement and maintenance remain more important than species labels.

Should all vegetation be removed near the home?

The safest immediate zone is predominantly noncombustible. Limited planting may be appropriate where local guidance allows it, provided plants are isolated, irrigated and easy to maintain.

Is gravel always safe?

Gravel is noncombustible, but it can still collect leaves, needles and embers. It must be kept clean.

Does a green lawn provide protection?

A healthy, irrigated lawn can help interrupt surface fuels, but dry edges, stored items and adjacent shrubs can still create fire pathways.
