Zone 0: The Immediate Noncombustible Zone
Zone 0 is the first five feet around a structure—the area where embers, combustible debris and attached materials can most directly ignite the building.
Why Zone 0 matters
Wind-driven embers can accumulate at wall bases, corners, decks, door thresholds, beneath siding laps and around utility penetrations. Combustible mulch, plants, fencing, furniture and stored items can become the first link in a chain of ignition.
Ember accumulation
Corners, recesses, roof runoff areas and the bases of exterior walls can trap embers and dry debris.
Fuel continuity
Plants, mulch, wood borders and attached features can carry fire from the landscape directly to the structure.
Radiant exposure
Burning vegetation or stored materials close to windows and siding can create severe localized heat exposure.
Maintenance drift
A good design can become vulnerable over time as leaves accumulate, plants grow and storage migrates toward the home.

Planting in and near Zone 0
The strongest approach is to avoid permanent combustible vegetation within the immediate five-foot zone. Where local rules or site constraints differ, keep plantings sparse, isolated, irrigated and physically separated from siding, windows, vents and attachments.
- Avoid continuous foundation planting.
- Do not allow branches to contact walls, roofs, decks or railings.
- Remove dead growth, dry grasses, leaf litter and accumulated needles.
- Use individual containers only where they can be moved and maintained.
- Keep vines and climbing plants off exterior walls and attached structures.

How wide should Zone 0 be?

Can gravel alone make Zone 0 safe?
No. Gravel is noncombustible, but combustible debris, plants, edging, furniture and attachments can still create ignition paths.
Are succulents automatically fire-safe?
No plant is fireproof. Plant condition, spacing, maintenance, moisture and proximity to the structure matter more than labels alone.
Can I keep planters next to the house?
Movable noncombustible containers may be workable when sparsely planted and carefully maintained, but permanent combustible planters against the structure should be avoided.
Does Zone 0 include attached decks?
Attached decks, stairs, landings, fences and other features should be evaluated as extensions of the structure because they can create direct ignition pathways.
